Some of you may have heard that Maranacook High School athletics will be joining the Mountain Valley Conference (MVC) beginning in the fall of 2023. We have been a member of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference (KVAC) for several years now and have had great success and a positive relationship with the schools within the league. I wanted to share with you some of the factors that went into this decision so that you know the facts, not what may be out there in the public through word of mouth.
Several factors went into the decision to join the MVC. Our enrollment numbers have declined by more than 100 students in the past 15 years. In 2006 we were a Class B size school of around 480, and now we have 360. Most of our sports now compete state-wide at the Class C level, the exceptions being basketball and skiing which are Class B. The KVAC comprises 28 schools, most of which are in Class A or B. The MVC comprises 14 schools, mostly in Class C.
Another factor was transportation, we travel some great distances within the KVAC and by joining the MVC, we will reduce our travel by about 10 miles on average per trip. This will help with busing, dismissals from school, and late school nights.
There are also some things the MVC can offer that we currently don’t have in the KVAC like conference championship game opportunities, better chances at all-conference recognitions, student leadership opportunities, senior scholar-athlete recognition, and the increased chances of healthy, local rivalries against other schools in our area.
This decision was made in collaboration with all the varsity coaches, high school administrators, and the superintendent. I am looking forward to this change and will continue to work hard and advocate for our athletes. Please email me if you have any questions.
