PreK and Kindergarten Programs: We offer a half-day PreK program at three elementary schools: Readfield Elementary provides both AM and PM sessions, while Manchester and Mt. Vernon Elementary Schools offer only AM or PM sessions. Residents of Wayne attend PreK at Readfield Elementary School. RSU 38's full-day Kindergarten program is available at all four of our elementary schools.

About the Screening: The screening aims to evaluate your child's readiness skills and abilities to ensure we are prepared for the upcoming school year. This process is essential for helping us identify areas where your child may benefit from extra academic or social support, facilitating a smooth transition. We use the Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL-4) as our screening tool. It assesses a child’s motor skills (skipping, jumping, cutting, writing), conceptual skills (knowledge of colors and counting), and language skills (understanding letters and words, problem-solving abilities). The parent and teacher questionnaires also evaluate a child’s self-help skills (dressing, feeding, bathing) and social-emotional skills (interacting with others and maintaining focus). Qualified professionals will conduct the screening and engage with your child in a friendly and supportive manner. Each screening component is administered one-on-one and takes about half an hour to complete. Please have your child wear comfortable shoes and clothing.

Some families may feel hesitant or nervous about their child’s screening. However, please understand that we conduct this standard procedure annually, always keeping your child’s best interests in mind. We appreciate your cooperation and support as we strive to ensure your child receives the best possible start to their education and the necessary assistance to be successful. Additionally, your child’s principal will send a letter in July 2025 with important information.

Sincerely,

Karen G. Smith
Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Assessment
